Art & Design students unveil first external exhibition at Crown Gallery Carlisle
An exciting new art exhibition has opened at Carlisle’s Crown Gallery which showcases the first external display of work by second year students studying the National Extended Diploma in Art & Design at Carlisle College.
The exhibition called ‘Variations’ opened on Saturday and is the result of a seven week project brief entitled ‘Inside Outside’ which gave students the opportunity to not only explore different types of media, but bring to the fore ideas that matched their own specialism.
Commenting on the project and exhibition, Hannah Milburn, Lecturer National Subsidiary and Extended Diploma in Art and Design said, “Variations features 13 different interpretations of the brief and really gave students the opportunity to focus on areas of personal interest and express their individualism.
“They initially developed ideas in the art studio using a variety of mixed media techniques including heat transfer printing and acrylic and wax resist techniques, and then worked independently to create pieces that were individual to them including illustration, garment construction and digital imaging.”
The project also allowed the students to take a lead role in the curating and hanging of the works in the gallery, under the guidance of Crown Gallery owners Joe Miller and Julie Butterworth.
Hannah continued, “Working on this project has ensured the students are better prepared for their future careers by giving them a valuable insight into the whole process of hosting an exhibition - from curating, through to the creation and the hanging of the works in the gallery and they’re all delighted with the results.
The ‘Variations’ exhibition runs until Thursday 23 February at the Crown Gallery, 5 Lonsdale Street, Carlisle. For further information please contact crowngallery.net or call 01228 595055.
