Carlisle College student embarks on her ‘American Dream’ with a scholarship from AMDA Hollywood
Carlisle College student Heather Collingwood will shortly be leaving Cumbria to pursue her dreams in Hollywood, Los Angeles at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
Heather who is studying for her Level 3 Diploma in Performing Arts at the College of the Arts received the news that her application had been successful on 12 December 2011.
Heather said:
“I couldn’t believe the news. I was in tears when my mum told me I had been successful in my audition. I wasn’t expecting any news until late January. I am so lucky to have this opportunity. It is the best Christmas present I could have wished for. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me, and to AMDA for the scholarship. I now need to work hard on getting sponsorship to support my studies in Hollywood.”
“My dream is to perform in musical theatre on Broadway or in the West end.”
Celebrating nearly 50 years as one of America’s premier conservatories for the performing arts, AMDA is recognized throughout the industry for its rich history and tradition of launching some of the most successful careers in theatre, film and television. Graduates of AMDA have gone on to appear on TV in shows including ER, Ugly Betty, Sex in the City and Broadway shows including Chicago and Cats.
Heather has secured a VIP Merit Based scholarship worth $5,000 per year. The course fees are $27,000 and Heather is seeking sponsorship from local entrepreneurs, businesses and arts organisations. Those interested in supporting Heather should contact Carlisle College.
Heather, originally from Whitehaven, is living in Carlisle in order to study at the College of the Arts. Heather secured her scholarship funded by AMDA following a successful audition in London on 3 December where she sang ‘Home’ from Beauty and the Beast and performed a classical theatre monologue.
Heather’s mother, Ann Collingwood took the call from AMDA:
“When I got the phone call I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I am so proud of Heather but I will miss her while she is away. Heather was unsure whether to go to the audition, but I told her if she didn’t go she would never know. The realisation is still sinking in, but I’ve always believed in her, and know she’ll succeed.”
Course Tutor, Gary Vear said:
“Heather has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the course during her time with us. We are all delighted that her application for scholarship has been successful. Her work has always been exemplary. We are now supporting her in the application process.”
Principal Moira Tattersall said:
“I am delighted that Heather has succeeded in securing this scholarship. AMDA has a fantastic reputation for launching some very high profile careers. I wish Heather every success, and I am sure we will all be looking out for her on the stage or the big screen. Heather has demonstrated the highest level of dedication to her course and I am sure she will look back on her time at Carlisle College with fond memories.”
