Course Content

This course is designed for students who wish to broaden their skills and knowledge in popular music performance, composition and context. It is project lead and collaborates with the Music Production, Media and Performing Arts courses to provide students with an exciting, industry learning experience. You will experience the excitement of playing in a band as well as developing your solo performance skills, learning to adapt your playing/singing style for a variety of musical genres, experiencing popular music from the 1960s to present day. We also hold acoustic nights for students to gain valuable performance experience, hopefully leading to paid gigs!

The Campus has some excellent facilities for music performance and production including a professional recording studio, post-production suite, music lab and music rehearsal rooms, all equipped with industry standard hardware and software.

Method of Study

You will learn through a variety of methods including lectures, band rehearsals and work experience.

Method of Assessment

Assessment includes a range of methods and styles suited to the expectations of a musician such as:

  • Digital portfolio – creating on online presence through the development of your own website, SoundCloud & YouTube account, to display your knowledge and showcase your creativity.
  • Written documents – essays, journalistic reviews, test papers, reports & case studies
  • Reflective diaries of your band rehearsal process – helping you understand how to make a group rehearsal more productive and ensure you continue to improve by setting targets.
  • Gigs (lots of them!) – developing your technical musical ability and stage presence in our theatre and local music venues and bars.

This style of assessment draws on the learning throughout the qualification and assessments are graded using a scale of pass, merit and distinction criteria.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs, at Grade 4/C and above including Maths and English and preferably music however, this is not essential.
  • Level 2 Music at a Merit grade
  • Pass an audition – demonstrating your instrumental/vocal skills.
What Can I Do Next?

There is the option to apply and progress on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production.
