UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production - Music Production

This Level 3 one year entry course is designed for students who wish to broaden their skills and knowledge in music recording, sound production and technical events areas of lighting, visuals and sound. This course will prepare students for employment and progression to higher education and is equivalent to 3 AS Levels. It is also a requirement for entry onto the Extended Diploma in Music Production.

The course is predominately project led and has collaborative projects with Music, Media and Performing Arts courses providing students with exciting hands on vocational learning experiences. You will take part in both academic and practical studies alongside other like-minded and creative students who all share a keen interest in the music and sound industries.  On this course you will be working with other students in a supervised, structured and well-resourced environment.  These resources include a professional recording studio, post-production suite, music lab and music practice rooms, all equipped with industry standard hardware and software.

Course Content

You will study units throughout the academic year, which will include:

  • Studio Production
  • Computer Music and Recording
  • Technical Events
  • Listening Skills
  • Technology in Performance
  • Studio Production Mixing and Mastering
  • Collaborative Music Production

Most units are delivered and assessed through industry related projects that put students into real industry situations including:

  • Live sound music road show
  • Music record production
  • Music technology performance

Students on this course are involved in running the sound for most of the years gigs for Music and Music Production and have opportunities to be involved in technical aspects of Performing Arts shows and productions.

You will be assessed in a mixture of different ways such as:

  • Digital productions and portfolios
  • Demonstrations
  • Presentations
  • Reports
  • Essays
  • Formal tests
  • Observed workshops

Entry Requirement

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (9-4) including maths and English
Or Level 2 vocational qualification at Merit or Distinction and A*-C (9-4) in maths and English
Or Scottish equivalent

GCSE Music desirable but not essential

Applicants should have good instrumental skills, vocal skills or demonstrable production skills; however, we do not require you to have an official music qualification. A basic understanding of music theory and or composition is also beneficial.

Audition and Interview

  • Perform two piece of music on your specialist instrument

  • Present a portfolio of work and a piece of music programming/sequencing production work.

What Can I Do Next?

A Level 3 UAL is a recognised qualification and accepted by most Higher Education institutions as an alternative/additional qualification to traditional AS and A2 Level qualifications. This course carries the same weighting as three A2 qualifications should you wish to apply for undergraduate courses.
