An enormous number of teaching opportunities exist across the learning and skills sector, in organisations including further education colleges, sixth forms, adult and community learning, the National Health Service, the prison service, the police service and in private sector training organisations.

UCLan programmes are designed for those wishing to pursue a teaching career in these organisations.

Whilst these are not a school teaching qualifications there are now employment opportunities in some schools for post-16 teachers, particularly for teachers of vocational subjects. This is the non-graduate route into being a qualified teacher in the Post Compulsory sector.

The aim of the programme is to enable you to develop into an outstanding teacher. You will learn how to plan, implement, assess and evaluate teaching and undertake a full teaching role.

All course work is related to the actual teaching practice situation.

There are no additional costs associated with this course however there is one recommended core textbook which is available in the College Library.

Course Content

Method of Study

On the full time programme you will spend 2 days a week in class working on the theoretical modules and classroom fundamentals. Your tutors will model good teaching practice that you can use in your own teaching. In addition, you will complete 150 hours of teaching practice that runs throughout the year (approximately 5 hours per week class contact, however trainees are expected to spend up to 2 days per week in their teaching placement) and must be carried out within an approved adult education setting. Support is provided to secure your teaching placement however please note that additional travel cost may be incurred depending upon location.

Teaching practice is supported by the programme tutors and by a Subject Specialist Mentor within your department both of whom will observe you teaching and work closely with you to develop your practice and skills.

The course is very intensive and requires commitment and dedication. You must be prepared to dedicate up to another 2 days a week in addition to your class days and teaching practice, to independent study, reading and lesson planning.

Method of Assessment

You will complete a number of marked essays, case-studies and presentations ranging from 500 to 3500 words in length.

For your teaching practice you will build up a Teaching Practice Portfolio which will include a total of 8, one hour graded observations carried out by the teacher training staff.

Entry Requirements

A Level 3 (NVQ) or level 4 (HND/C or Foundation Degree) qualification in your teaching subject specialism. Applicants must hold a relevant qualification of at least the level above that of their prospective learners. 

5 GCSEs at Grades A*-C (9-4 or equivalent) to include English. Applicants who do not have English as a GCSE will be required to successfully achieve the University's diagnostic test prior to entry to the programme.

The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English (IELTS 7.5 or equivalent).

To enrol on this course you must hold a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) for your placement setting (arranged once enrolled).

What Can I Do Next?

Both programmes form part of a modular Education Studies framework at the University which presents a convenient opportunity for progression to further study.

BA (Honours) Education Studies.

Holders of the Certificate in Education receive advanced standing of 180 credits (50% of the award) for the BA (Honours) Education Studies.

Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice

The programme is available to teachers and trainers with a degree or equivalent who have completed the PGCE modules (60 credits at levels 6 and 7) with UCLan.  It consists of 3 modules (60 credits) at level 7.

Master's in Education (MEd)

Successful completion of the PG Diploma allows teachers to progress to the final dissertation stage of the Master's in Education (MEd) programme.

Following the MEd, you may wish to progress still further and study on the taught professional doctorate.
