Level 2 Diploma in Hair & Make-Up Artistry
The Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry is a technical certificate qualification aimed at those who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist.
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy.
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting. Learners will develop their abilities to ensure continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst developing abilities to produce a total look for competition work.
In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed.

- Client Consultation for Hair Service
- Shampoo & Condition Hair
- Colour hair using temporary colour
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Apply Make-up
- Body art design
- Shaping and Colouring of Brows
- The art of dressign hair
Method of Study
You will learn through observing and participating in a wide range of practical activities in our modern commercial salons.
Method of Assessment
Your progress will be continually monitored and assessed by your tutors. You will produce an electronic portfolio with records of your practical activities, written tests and oral questions.
4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D), including maths and English or Level 1 vocational qualification at Merit or Distinction and Level 1 qualifications in maths and English.
This qualification will qualify learners to become employed and/or self employed as a hair and make-up artist.
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a hair and make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
- Beauty and/or hair salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings
- National Health Service
- Product manufacturing and training
Learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 at Carlisle College in one or more of the following areas:
- Theatrical and media make-up
Students will be expected to purchase a kit and uniform, which must be worn to every session.
