Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing
This qualification has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills through the following units; introducing you to the hair and beauty industries, how to present a professional image and work with others in the salon. You will be able to work on a salon reception, develop your creative skills in the art of dressing hair and applying temporary colour, how to create a hair and beauty image, provide effective shampooing and conditioning hair, how to display retail stock or the creative art of styling women’s hair.
To further enhance your practical skills you will have the opportunity to choose from the following hairdressing units; how to develop your skills in the art of either plaiting or plaiting and twisting hair, and styling men’s hair.
Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the hair industry. You will also develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of each unit.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in hairdressing and will provide you with the foundation for further learning. It will also enable you to perform your own services and to assist others in the salon.

As part of your course, you will be required to study towards functional skills in Maths & English or GCSE. You will also undertaken work placement.
You will learn through observing and participating in a wide range of practical activities in our modern commercial salons, from shampooing and blow drying to reception and colour.
You will complete written tests, oral questions and produce an electronic portfolio.
Your progress will be continually monitored and assessed by your tutor. You will produce an electronic portfolio with records of your practical activities, written tests and oral questions.
GCSEs at grades E-F (2-1) or Entry Level qualification or Scottish equivalent.
Subject to an initial assessment and interview with the course tutor.
If you enjoy hairdressing as a career you may then progress on to a Level 2 Diploma and be accredited for the units you have achieved at Level 1, subject to completion and passing the interview criteria, passing functional skills or GCSE qualifications and competence in practical assessments.
Other Details
Students will be expected to purchase hairdressing kit and uniform, which must be worn to every session. Price on application.
