Introduction to the Arts

BTEC Level 1 Introductory Certificate Art and Design

Do you want to come to college to work on a range of creative projects and develop your creative skills? Do you need time to improve your confidence and independence as well improve your maths and English grades?

If that sounds like you then the Level 1 Introductory Certificate Art & Design could be the right course for you.

This course is designed as a foundation for students with low level GCSE grades to develop creative skills that future employers and colleges are looking for such as working in 2D and 3D in a range of different materials as well as developing subject specific skills such as working with clay, textiles and digital imaging.

Alongside these creative projects you will develop employability skills through Group Tutorial sessions which cover topics such as preparing for work, volunteering, preparing a CV, practicing interview skills and going out on work experience to broaden your future opportunities.

The projects are continuously assessed through practical and written assignments throughout the year and you receive feedback on your progress as you study.

Maths and English are also a compulsory part of your study programme if you have not already achieved a grade 3 / D at GCSE. If you have achieved a grade 3 / D in one of the subjects then you will take part in the Carlisle College Extended Project programme designed to help you keep building on these essential skills.

You will take part in studio sessions and workshops to develop your practical art & design skills as well as complete written and group assignments to help enhance your academic and teamwork skills. You will attend maths and English classes on a weekly basis to help you make progress in these two key areas.

Method of Assessment

This course is internally assessed at various points throughout the year and externally verified during the summer term. There are no formal exams, you will be marked on the practical or written work you do in studio; such as an art project or a set of worksheets.  You will need to submit a portfolio of evidence for each project and your subject tutor will keep you up to date with what you need to include.

Examples of assessment evidence you may produce include presentations, worksheets, video recordings, practical pieces and each unit is formally marked as pass, merit, distinction or unclassified once it has been submitted at various point throughout the year. Once your work has been marked you will receive verbal and written feedback so you can keep track of your progress and know how to improve in future work.

You will also be informally assessed in studio on a weekly basis to make sure you are on track and working to the best of your ability.

Entry Requirements

You must have GCSEs at grade E-F / grade 1-2, an Entry 3 Level qualification or Scottish equivalent. You will be expected to complete an application form and then attend a Future Student Event where you will meet with the Course Tutor.

At the Future Student Event you will be invited to a group presentation which will give up an overview of the College and more detail about the course. This presentation will then be followed by 1-1 time with the Course Tutor.

Your interview will give you an opportunity to discuss your application and demonstrate your potential. It will give us the opportunity to discuss the qualification with you and assess if it meets your needs.

We look for lively, interesting people who are enthusiastic about being at college and want to develop their skills further. You must be open minded, enthusiastic, prepared to work with others and be willing to work hard and complete work in your own time as well as in college.
