HEFC: ACCESS TO COMBINED STUDIES

The Access course is a nationally recognised course for adult students (aged 19 or over).  It is designed to provide adults with the skills, knowledge and confidence they require to progress onto Degrees and Diplomas in Higher Education in a broad range of academic and vocational subjects.  The course has excellent links with all local providers of Higher Education and Universities nationally.

There are a range of career pathways that you can follow as part of the Access programme.  These can include:

  • Access to business, legal and language studies
  • Access to combined studies
  • Access to education studies and early years professions
  • Access to health, social care and professional practice
  • Access to science, engineering and computing
  • Access to social sciences and humanities

Entry Requirements:

Before you start the programme you will have an interview and undergo an initial assessment.  This will help to determine whether you are ready to begin study at this level or whether a bridging course at level 2 would be a more appropriate first step.



Course Content:

The course runs from September to June and students study 3 chosen modules as well as the Toolbox (study skills) module.

Available modules may include: *

  • Business studies
  • Chemistry
  • English language
  • English literature
  • Health studies
  • Human Biology
  • Information technology
  • Introductory science (level 2)
  • Psychology
  • Quantitative methods
  • Social welfare

 

* Please note that all Pathway and Module choices are subject to demand and availability.

You will be expected to attend 3 days a week from 9.30 – 2.30 and on one of the 3 days you will be expected to attend until 3.30 in order to complete your Toolbox module.  If you are not sure which modules would be best suited to you and your planned progression route you will be able to discuss this with a tutor at interview.



Method of Study

You will study with groups of other adults who are also wishing to progress on to University or Higher Education in a supportive yet challenging environment. Your classroom sessions will consist of a range of activities including independent study, group work, lecture and seminar. You will also take part in external visits and benefit from guest speakers. In addition to the time that you spend working in the classroom you will be required to carry out up to 10 hours per week of study in your own time. 



Progression Routes

Excellent and well established progression routes are available into local and national Degree, Diploma, HND, HNC and Foundation Degree courses.
