A minimum of 5GCSE’s at Grades A*-B or Scottish equivalent.



Course Content:

AS Level
Unit 1 – Aspects of Narrative (examined unit)

  • An exploration of the role of narrative in four texts: ­Great Expectations by Charles Dickens; The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and two poets from the AQA anthology.

Unit 2 – Dramatic Genres (internal assessment: two tasks)

  • An in depth study of two plays in the genre of comedy: one by Shakespeare, one by a more modern author.

Unit 3 - Texts and Genres (examined unit)

  • A detailed exploration of at least three texts in either the genre of the Gothic or the Pastoral. Texts might include: Macbeth or As You Like It by William Shakespeare; Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte; or Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh.

Unit 4 Further and Independent Reading (internal assessment)

    • A wide-ranging unit covering a larger range of texts, some of which you may choose yourself. This unit focussed on developing reading skills, analysing texts independently, and reading, evaluating and applying critical theories.
    • A2 units to be decided

      Various methods of study are used including:
