Sociology is about developing a critical understanding of society, and through this understanding providing a basis for highlighting and explaining social problems such as ill health, poverty, crime.
You will learn how society influences individual’s lives. You will also learn how to express yourself coherently, how to challenge and evaluate information presented to you, and how scientific information is produced.
Sociology is a good general subject for students, because most professional careers, including medicine, require students to have some knowledge of Sociology and social theory.

    The teaching and learning on this course include teacher led presentations, discussions, practical's, student led presentations and workshop activities.



    Method of Assessment

    Your knowledge will be assessed by means of externally assessed examinations and internally assessed assignments.



    Progression Routes

    Sociology is a useful subject if you are considering Higher Education.  It is also important for any career involving dealing with the General Public e.g. teaching, police, social work, care work, working in personnel.  It is also particularly relevant for those working in market research and social science research.



    Other Details

    On successful completion of the course you will receive an A level in Sociology, equivalent to up to 140 UCAS points depending on your examination grade.  Early exit from the course is possible at the end of the first year and satisfactory completion of the first year modules will result in an AS level sociology, equivalent to up to 60 UCAS points depending on your examination grades.
