UCLAN CERT IN TEACHING (ASSOCIATE LECTURER AWARD)

This qualification is open to all new in-service, pre-service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector (post 16). The certificate is designed to cover the role of the Associate Lecturer who will have limited responsibilities in terms of teaching as identified below:

  • Teaching from packs and pre-prepared materials, with reduced responsibility for curriculum design.
  • Teaching mainly on a one to one basis.
  • Teaching on a limited range or level of programmes within a curriculum area. Teaching on short courses. Someone whose main role is not that of teaching but delivers learning to others on more than an occasional basis.

    Entry Requirements:

    Entrants/applicants must have the following:- 5 GCSEs at C grade or above or equivalent. A level 3 National Qualifications Framework (NQF) qualification in their own subject specialism. A level 2 NQF in literacy or equivalent. (GCSE English C and above). Applicants who do not hold the level 2 in literacy or the equivalent can undertake a diagnostic test; satisfactory completion will allow access to the programme. Potential to complete 30 hours of teaching which may be voluntary or paid over the course of the programme.

    Course Content:

    The qualification is made up of 2, 20 credit modules at level 1HE (first year degree level). The qualification comprises the following study and activities: An initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio. Completion of the Threshold Award 'Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector'. Detailed exploration of the teaching and learning process. Teaching practice / placement for a minimum of 30 hours in your subject specialism during which you will be observed for a minimum of 3 hours. (observations must be satisfactory to achieve the award). Observation of other practitioners in subject area (2hrs).

    Progression Routes

    If your role as a teacher changes and you begin to take on more responsibility for planning, delivering and assessing the teaching and learning process you will be able to progress onto the Full Award programme providing all other entry requirements are met. The Full Award requires trainees to undertake a minimum of 150 hours of teaching while on the programme and 30 of these can be carried across from this certificate leaving 120 hours to complete. The Full Award also requires trainees to be observed on 8 occasions and for a minimum of 8 hours. Two of the observations from the certificate can be carried into the full award leaving 6 satisfactory observations left to be achieved.

    ACCREDITATION OF PRIOR LEARNING (APL)
    APL of a maximum of 10 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a Threshold Award 'Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector' from any other awarding body providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme.
