UCLAN FD HEALTH & SOCIALCARE
The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care has been developed by the Faculty of Health at UCLAN in response to:-
- the needs of health and social care providers in the voluntary, private and public sectors
- to enhance staff training and qualifications
- to meet service quality and performance agendas
The course combines academic understanding and skills, with generic and specific work related skills, and incorporates occupational standards health and social works. It aims to equip students working or intending to work in this sphere with the relevant knowledge and skills, as well as addressing their continuing professional development needs.
The course will be relevant to students working or intending to work with individuals, families, groups or communities in residential and community based health and social care related settings, with for example, families and children, older people, people with physical or learning disabilities, young people or those with mental health or drug related problems.

Entry Requirements:
Students are expected to have studied previously to a level 3 standard with a minimum of 1 completed Access module, or 1 A level or equivalent advanced study.
In certain circumstances accreditation for prior relevant health/care experience can be considered.
The course requires students to undertake a work placement, which may involve work with children or vulnerable adults. Applicants who are not already in relevant employment will be required to obtain a State of Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) for which a processing fee will be payable. Disclosure or an unsatisfactory outcome from the CRB application can be discussed at interview and will not always stop you joining the course.
In addition you must have a successful individual interview, 2 references and pass a vocational related assessment.

The social care pathways enable students to follow a selection of modules that will reflect their employment interests and meet the needs of their service user groups. In addition students will develop an understanding of anti-oppressive practice which underpins work with the most vulnerable people in society, through broader based learning that focuses on values and principles of service provision, and work based learning in the social sector.
Method of Study
Students will study through a variety of tuition techniques, i.e. lectures, discussions, small group work with discussion role-play etc.Method of Assessment
Each module is assessed either through essays, case studies, personal reflective logs etc.Progression Routes
Opportunities will be open in residential, domiciliary and day care, nursing and care homes, advisory, support and rehabilitations centres, clinics and surgeries, voluntary advocacy and community organisations, acute, primary and social care agencies, and in health development/education activities in schools, neighbourhoods and prisons. Employment opportunities in the health and social care sector are fluid and new roles are constantly developing as a result in changes in policy and organisation. This course provides an overview of issues and policies in the Health & Social Care Sector and leads to either a 3rd year place on a:- BSc (HONS) in Health and Social Care BA (HONS) Care Community & Citizenship. (This can also progress onto a MA Social Work if you obtain a 2 : 2. Students who do not wish to top-up to one of the above degrees may use the Foundation Degree qualification to gain employment locally in the Health and Care Sector.Apply for this course online
