UCLAN PRE-SERVICE CERT EDUCATION

This qualification is open to all new, pre service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector and course is completed in one academic year. The certificate is designed for those who are, or hope to be employed in a full teaching role having responsibility for learners throughout the learning process and engaging in teaching on a range of academic levels within their subject specialism.
Full Award trainees maybe either pre service (placement) or in service (contracted teaching) and will be expected to demonstrate the following:-

  • Teach students of 16 years and older.
  • Undertake diagnostic assessments with learners.
  • Develop schemes of work and plans from subject curricula.
  • Develop resources for teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Deliver teaching and learning to a range of learners and programmes across a selection of academic levels.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a range of assessment strategies to promote and test learning.
  • Evaluate learning programmes, resources and assessment both with learners and independently.
  • Give advice and guidance to learners.

Voluntary teaching placement or contracted teaching should be in the FE or the regulated adult learning sector. This leads to QTLS status.

Entry Requirements:

All Certificate in Education applicants must have the following:-

  • A level 3 NQF qualification in their own subject specialism.
  • Have an appropriate level of education (5 GCSEs at grade C and above or equivalent is minimum qualification, and must include English Language).
  • The ability to verbally communicate fluently and confidently in English.
  • A teaching or training placement for a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the course of the programme.
  • Trainees on the full time programme must arrange an appropriate teaching placement in consultation with the course provider.

All PGCE entrants / applicants must have the following:-

  • A first degree or equivalent.
  • 5 GCSEs at grade C and above or equivalent is a minimum qualification, to include English Language
  • A level 3 NQF qualification in their teaching subject specialism, if other than their degree
  • A teaching or training placement for a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the course of the programme.
  • The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional, spoken English.
  • Trainees on the full time programme must arrange an appropriate teaching placement in consultation with the course provider.


  • Course Content:

    The qualification is made up of six 20 credit modules.
    Certificate in Education Trainees undertake 3 modules at level 1HE / 4NQF and 3 modules at level 2HE / 5NQF
    PGCE Trainees undertake 3 modules at level 1HE/4NQF, 1 module at level 3HE/6NQF and 2 modules at Masters level 4HE/7NQF
    The qualification comprises the following modules:

      • Module One - Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
      • Module Two – Developing Professional Practice in Teaching and Learning.
      • Module Three – Curriculum Design and Alignment.
      • Module Four - Action Research.
      • Module Five – Teaching Inclusively and Reflecting on Practice.
      • Module Six – Contemporary Issues in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

    As well as completing these 6 modules, students are expected to complete 150 hours of teaching placement (approximately 5 hours per week)



    Method of Study

    You will attend 9 hours per week of classes in College and a further 5 hours per week on placement. It is expected that at least a further 10 hours per week will be spent on classroom planning, private reading, research and course assessments.



    Method of Assessment

    You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. The University of Central Lancashire and an external examiner moderate each course.
    There are three components of assessment:

    • Written assignments. You will complete a variety of assignments including academic essays, case studies, presentations and observations of other teachers.
    • A portfolio of 150 documented hours per year of teaching in your subject area.
    • Eight 1 hour teaching observations per year, six of which will be graded.

    To be awarded the Certificate in Education or PGCE, you must pass all three components.



    Progression Routes

    Undergraduate (Cert Ed) trainees will have 120 credits at undergraduate level and can progress onto Combined Honours programmes, BA in Education and CPD Framework at the University of Central Lancashire
    Post Graduate Certificate Students will have 40 credits at Masters level and can progress onto the Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice and the MEd as well as the Post Graduate CPD Framework



    Other Details

    APL of a maximum of 10 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a threshold award Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector from any other awarding body, providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF, against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme.
    APL of a maximum of 20 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector from any other awarding body, providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF, against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme.
