Train to Gain

What is Train to Gain?

Train to Gain is a service for business that includes training and assessment over a wide range of NVQ qualifications. The programme can be tailored to meet the needs of individual organisations.

Who is eligible for a free Train to Gain programme?

Candidates must be a lawful UK resident for 3 years, be over the age of 19 and working in England:

  • With a contract of employment or
  • As a volunteer for an organisation
  • with paid members of staff or
  • Self employed and registered with HM
  • Revenue and Customs

Train to Gain is focused on members of staff that do not currently hold a full level 2 qualification. (such as NVQ 2 , 5 good GCSEs at A* - C, Intermediate Diploma).

What qualifications are on offer?

Most candidates take a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) usually at level 2. Recent changes have allowed opportunities for second level 2 qualifications as well as level 3 and 4, although in some circumstances a contribution towards the cost of training will be requested.

How does the programme work?

Once the programme has been discussed with the employee an individual learning plan is drawn up and agreed. This sets out the plan for training and development. An NVQ Assessor is assigned to each candidate and a timetable is worked out that fits around the employee’s working day. This can include weekend and evening work if required. For experienced candidates they may only need to be assessed on their competence in the skills required by the qualification. For those with less experience a more detailed training plan will be organised to provide the candidates with the understanding that they need in order to develop their skills. No matter how the training takes place, it will be based on what skills are needed to be effective in the job and the emphasis will be on bridging the gaps between what the candidate does and doesn’t already know.
