Enrichment
Your time at Carlisle College is not just about study. We want to make your experience at college rewarding, so we have loads of fun, enrichment activities throughout the year that can really enhance college life and help you get maximum enjoyment from your time at the college. We are always happy to listen to our student’s ideas of activities they would like to do and suggestions on how we can make the College even better.
Universities and employers are interested in seeing whether applicants can show evidence of wider interests, leadership skills and enthusiasm before deciding to offer a place, so we strongly encourage you to get involved in some of our enrichment activities alongside your main course. Our enrichment programme will increase your enjoyment of studies and equip you for future success.
Reasons to take part in enrichment activities
- Impress university admissions tutors by demonstrating not only your academic ability but also your social and personal development.
- Stand out from the crowd and enhance your job applications by showing potential employers that you have developed personal skills suck as the ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.
- Try something new, learn a skill or develop an existing hobby.
- Take a break from your studies to do something different.
- Feel part if the wider community and make a positive contribution to your local area.
- Build confidence and get a sense of achievement.
- Meet people with similar interests and make new friends.
VOLUNTEERING AND COMMUNITY WORK
During this year, students will have the chance to take part in various community projects throughout Carlisle and the County. This gives students the opportunity to give something back to the local community, while finding out first hand what goes on in our county. It will also look fantastic on their CVs.

· Would you like to meet new people?
· How about gaining some new skills and experiences?
If you can answer yes to any of the above then why not volunteer?
Volunteering is a great way for you to get involved in college life and have a positive impact in the community. You can gain an accredited certificate for the time you dedicate to volunteering, which may well impress a future employer or university.
There are loads of different ways you can get involved in volunteering such as volunteering in the community a fundraising event or by being on the student council or a class rep.
CUMBRIAN COLLEGES
There are loads of events throughout the year where Carlisle College will take part in events with Kendal, Lakes and Furness Colleges.
For 2011/12 these will include.
· Hair and Beauty Competitions
· Cumbria Olympics
· Equality and Diversity competition
· Cookery Competition
· Bowling Competition
· Cumbria’s Got Talent
· Wii and X Box Challenge
· Quizzes
There is so much to do throughout the year, your time at Carlisle College will be both exciting and rewarding.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
All College students have the opportunity to participate in activities on a Wednesday afternoon, these include:
· Netball
· Trampolining
· Football
· College Radio

STUDENT COUNCIL
2009/10 saw the first College Student Council being formed with various officers’ roles up for grabs.
The Council is run by students for students to:
- Represent what students think
- Run student activities.
- Promote student welfare.
- This helps students gain a better understanding of how the College works, great works experience and looks fantastic on their CVs.
NUS EXTRA CARD
As a Carlisle College student (full-time or part-time) you are entitled to a NUS Extra Card. This is the national and official student discount card.
This card gives you access to loads of fantastic discounts from online stores like Amazon and ticket master, high street shops such as Superdrug, Vue Cinema and Game and a variety of local stores – basically wherever you see “Student Discount available” in shops the NUS Extra Card will give you access to these.
Some local companies accept your college ID card.
The NUS Extra Card is £11 and valid from August 2011 – August 2012- so the sooner you buy the card the more discounts you’ll get.
You can buy your card at the Freshers Fair on 14th September 2011 or at Reception any time you will need to take a passport sized photograph and £11 or you can pay by card and upload a digital photo online at www.nus.org.uk – click here to buy your card.
NUS Extra Cards bought online are sent to the College within 2 weeks. You will receive a text letting you know when it is ready to collect. For more information contact Kerry Armstrong, Student Liaison Officer, Student Services.
