Fantastic new facilities for our students

With support from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Cumbria, a multi-million pound rebuild has taken place. We have built an environment that Carlisle and Cumbria can be proud of. An environment combining the Carlisle College hallmarks of warmth, friendliness and strong relationships between students, staff, the wider public and business with an innovative and contemporary facility designed and resourced to meet the training needs of our community.

Carlisle College is transforming its campus into an innovative, high-tech, sustainable learning environment, with support from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). The College is aligning itself with the LSC aspiration for the creation of world-class building for innovative teaching and learning for the 21st century.

The College embarked upon a modernisation programme in 2005, which has resulted in an environment that Carlisle and Cumbria can be proud of. The new LRC is bright, airy and modern and has over 700 square metres of learning space which houses books, computers, magazines, videos, DVDs and much more. In this interactive learning environment, there is a mixture of open plan, group and individual study areas, with relaxed seating and quiet, individual or small group study rooms. It meets the needs of all its learners. Our computer facility has over 50 new PCs using wireless technology and all come with the latest software to support your studies.

Trolleys mean that it is possible to move equipment to a quiet room of your choice within the LRC. We also have a bank of laptops for students to borrow and 20 handheld video cameras for students to borrow to record work for their e-portfolios.

Looking to the future….

The second phase of the campus re-development will begin in 2010 and will feature a brand new purpose-build building that will boast the following areas:

  • Hair, Beauty and Holistic Salons

  • Music Technology Classroom

  • Health and Social Care

  • Childcare

  • Bespoke LLDD facilities to support independence

  • Retail facilities

  • Technology Balcony

  • Pilot Concept Classrooms

  • Student Services

The College also hopes to develop a 14-19 Hub, special areas for 14-16 year old students where they can access Health advice and services to support their school and college studies.

The 14-19 Hub will have an identity of its own while still remaining part of the whole college environment.

The sections of the college will be brought together through an open plan atrium space that will house new kitchen and restaurant facility for students to learn hospitality skills. Salon and college reception, student services and other communal areas that will form the thriving pulsating heart of the college.
