The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology will provide students with opportunities to develop and utilise broad, transferable skills by encouraging an ethos of personal and professional development.
Students will move on to the extended Diploma in year 2 after completing the Diploma in year 1. The course is designed to encourage students to think and work as creative individuals. They will develop their research, planning and production skills and learn to work in a more independent way.
There will be an opportunity to undertake professional work experience, creating content for local organisations. There is also an emphasis on planning for progression to university or entry level employment within the media sector or other industries.
The Extended Diploma has 5 units. Units 9-12 are developmental. Unit 13, the final unit on the course is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. The aim throughout the course is for each student to develop an understanding of process of making creative content. This will include consideration of ways to reach a specified audience, the analysis of historical and current issues and ideology such as diversity and representation and lots of practical testing. experimentation and application. Students will continue to create their own content, using appropriate practical methods with an awareness of time management and safety. They will need to show problem solving and decision-making and the use of evaluation and self-reflection for personal and creative development. By the end of the course, students will ideally be independent, creative thinkers and be able to effectively and confidently present themselves and their work.
Students will learn;
- Unit 9: Characteristics and contexts in creative media production - These units are taught together. There will be 2 projects which will involve working in a small team within a specific role. Each student will undertake their own research, planning, production, and an evaluation.
- Unit 10: Engaging with an audience in creative media production - The projects are updated and adapted annually but have included Portmanteau films, music videos, short genre films, films inspired by directors and actors which were crested for Keswick Film Festival, adverts and photography.
- Unit 11: Preparing for progression in creative media production - For this unit students concentrate on their career progression which will include a skills review and setting goals, university research, applying for university or research of alternative training/ employment routes, creating a CV and a showreel of work.
- Unit 12: Specialist study in creative media production - This unit involves the selection of a media related topic to research in detail and the creation of a 1000-word essay. Research projects have included directors, genres, the development of special effects, Special effects Make up, the history of animation, Set design and female broadcasters.
- Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production - This graded unit involves undertaking an extensive individual, self-directed practical project which starts with a proposal and then pitch, outlining ideas and inspirations and aims, then primary and secondary research, planning, application of ideas, the presentation of final piece and an overall evaluation of learning.
An Extended Diploma which is equivalent to 3 A levels.
Extra Studies:In order to work towards creating a media artefact ( which could be an animation, short film, photographs or an audio piece) there will be formal lectures, seminars with discussion and debate, group work, pitches and technical workshops( which will include lighting, audio, camera, editing and visual affects).
Students are expected to showcase their research, planning, practical application, and reflective journey on personal blogs. As well as writing, the evidence for assessment should be varied and research can include, photos, digital videos, infographics and mind maps, surveys and interviews and pieces of audio recording. All finished pieces of work will be expected to be screened and presented online and in class for detailed feedback to encourage personal and creative development.
- A pass or ideally a merit in the UAL Diploma in Creative Media Production.

The majority of students progress to Higher Education in the Screen Industries. Students have chosen to study filmmaking, film and television, media production, animation, Marketing, Event Management, postproduction, Digital Arts and radio production. Students have also gone on to study Journalism, Film Studies, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Performing Arts, Law and education.
Students also choose to take a further Diploma. This has included Business, performing Arts or the Foundation Art Diploma.
Some students choose to look for employment and can demonstrate competence in skills such as spoken and written communication, creative thinking, time management, working independently, teamwork and self-reflection.
