Why does my young person need to study English and/or Maths at college?

English and Maths are essential skills for everyday life, further study, and employment. If a learner has not yet achieved a grade 4/C at GCSE, the government requires them to continue studying these subjects until they do. Achieving these qualifications improves their future opportunities and confidence.

What qualifications will they study?

This depends on their prior attainment:

GCSE English Language and/or GCSE Maths if they achieved a grade 3.
Functional Skills English and Maths (Entry Level to Level 1) if they achieved below grade 3. We ensure every learner is placed on the right course for their level so they can make strong progress.

How are English & Maths lessons delivered at college?

Learners attend timetabled English and Maths lessons each week alongside their main study programme. Sessions are designed to be engaging, practical, and supportive, with a strong focus on building the skills they need both in and beyond college.

How can I help support my young person at home?

Encourage good attendance and punctuality, as this is vital for progress.
Ask about their English/Maths work and check they’re completing assignments.
Use everyday tasks - budgeting, reading, planning - to build confidence in these skills.
Remind them that improving takes time and consistent effort.

How will I know how my young person is progressing?

We track attendance, engagement, and assessment results throughout the year. Progress updates will be shared via:
