How is College different to Sixth Form?

Whether you want to continue on to sixth form or college, or are more interested in getting straight into work through an apprenticeship, its handy to learn about all of your options to ensure you're selecting the perfect option to suit you. In this guide, we take a quick look at what makes Carlisle College different, and how our vocational style of study could help take you further.

How is College different to Sixth Form?

How you'll study

At Carlisle College, we deliver a wide variety of practical, hands-on courses, meaning you'll learn through 'doing' rather than theory. You will mainly be assessed through assignments and in class, with less focus on exams compared with sixth form. We offer courses at different levels, so if you didn't get the grades you were hoping for at GCSE, we'll support you in progressing to the next level.

What subject you'll learn

At Carlisle College you will typically focus on one chosen subject as opposed to A levels where you may choose to study a variety of three or four. This will mean you get to focus on the specialised area you're passionate about, which is ideal if you know what you want to do in work or at university.

Who will teach you

Our tutors come with a wealth of industry experience, meaning you'll be taught by experts in the field! You'll learn in our fantastic facilities which, replicate real working environments so you'll gain the skills you need in the industry.

Live projects with industry

You'll gain true-to-life skills by working on live projects set by real employers. Our tutors come with excellent links to industry, allowing you to practice the skills you’ve been taught, enhance your CV and impress employers.

Work experience

In most of our courses, you'll have the chance to gain work experience through placements with employers, which is a great way to get an understanding of your chosen industry!

Independent learning

Unlike school, you'll be given free time throughout the college week to do independent learning, or socialise! There's also no uniform, so you'll be free to express yourself however you like.

Guest speakers

You'll hear first-hand what it's like to work in the industry through attending guest lectures from employers. You'll also have the chance to network with these employers which is a great way to come across work opportunities.

Trips and visits

Students on our courses benefit from an extensive range of trips and visits both home and abroad. Recent trips have included Malta; as well as more trips closer to home in London, Manchester, and Liverpool.
