We're thrilled that as a college group, NCG has been shortlisted for the Apprenticeship and Training Awards, in the category Best Use of Technology in Education. In response to the evolving technological landscape in industry, NCG has introduced several innovative tools to enhance student engagement and academic outcomes.
Carlisle College's plastering tutor, Matty McLeish has been at the forefront of this, integrating Metaverse Learning resources into our plastering apprenticeship course. Matty recently attended the House of Commons on behalf of NCG following our nomination.
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Environments (VE), along with digital learning SCORM packages, have revolutionised training delivery. These resources offer real-time, interactive guidance that prepares students for practical sessions and employment.
The interactive learning experience has proved to be highly effective in engaging students and increasing success, including students’ ability to understand technical specifications. The AR functionality within the VE packages allows staff and students to overlay digital tools and guidance directly onto the physical workspace, providing step-by-step instructions on plastering techniques, tool usage, and material application. This digital approach ensures students can follow precise instructions with confidence, reducing errors and enhancing skill acquisition.
Additionally, AR and VR enable teaching staff to highlight common mistakes and provide instant corrective feedback, allowing learners to adjust their techniques without the risks associated with a live environment.
The Apprenticeship and Training Awards, in association with City & Guilds, celebrate excellence in the UK’s apprenticeship and training sector and recognise outstanding commitment, innovation, and impact in developing the workforce, with a focus on diversity, sustainability, and equipping learners with essential skills for the future.
There are over 350 nominations, across 19 categories, so it is huge honour to be shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious awards. We look forward to attending the awards on Tuesday 11th March in Liverpool.
