Students from Carlisle College recently took part in an exciting international exchange visit to Eckener Schule in Flensburg, Germany, as part of a growing partnership between the two institutions.
The visit brought together 20 Construction, Engineering and Digital T Level students, offering them the opportunity to work alongside international peers, take part in real-world projects and experience a different culture and education system.
The partnership, first established through initial visits in 2024, has developed into a strong and collaborative programme. Both colleges work closely together to design activities that are relevant, engaging and beneficial for students in both countries.
During the multi-day visit, students were fully immersed in both technical learning and cultural experiences. They took part in practical workshops, including digital design and CAD, working collaboratively with German students despite language differences. These sessions helped develop key employability skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving.
Students also explored Flensburg, gaining insight into the city’s history and culture while building friendships and confidence outside of the classroom.
A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity to experience industry-standard environments, including a visit to the University of Flensburg’s server facilities, helping students visualise how their skills apply in real-world contexts.
Student feedback reflected the positive impact of the experience:
- “We really liked having some free time to explore the city together.”
- “I had a great experience and found the history of Flensburg really interesting.”
- “The server room was remarkable – it helped me understand how things work in real life.”
The exchange also builds on industry engagement, with partners such as Story Homes supporting the programme and providing additional real-world context for students.
Overall, the visit successfully enhanced students’ technical knowledge, confidence and intercultural understanding, while strengthening the ongoing partnership between Carlisle College and Eckener Schule.
This programme highlights the value of international learning experiences in preparing students for future careers in a global industry.4
