We’re delighted that former Carlisle College apprentice, Isabelle Smith has been shortlisted as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year at this month’s In-Cumbria Business Awards.
Isabelle is now a qualified Level 2 Painter & Decorator having completed her apprenticeship in May 2025. Employed by AJM Decorating LTD, Isabelle completed her apprenticeship in only 18 months, tackling stereotypes and maximising opportunities available to her.
Isabelle excelled in every aspect of her training, consistently producing work that exceeded expectations, to the point where she completed 6 months earlier than expected; also, a testament also to her employer, AJM Decorating Ltd and the time they have put into the workplace training.
In the words of her tutor, Dan Smith Painting & Decorating Lecturer at Carlisle College, “Izzy has consistently demonstrated dedication, talent, and a want to succeed in this traditionally male-dominated industry”.
Isabelle was awarded Apprentice of the Year at this year’s Carlisle College Apprenticeship Awards, due to her incredible progression and achievement since starting her apprenticeship in 2023.
Beyond practical abilities, she has shown exceptional teamwork with peers, sharing knowledge and offering support whenever it’s needed. Isabelle motivates those around her, and was not phased, by being the only female within her class or the first female to ever enrol on this programme.
Painting and Decorating is about much more than applying colours to a surface, it requires precision, planning, and an understanding of materials, and designs. From mastering brush techniques to creating seamless finishes in complex patterned papers, to special effects in marbling & graining; Isabelle excelled in every technique presented to her, keen to refine and develop these in line with her career ambitions.
Sarah McGrath, Principal at Carlisle College said “We’re thrilled that Isabelle has been recognised for her dedication and hard work. We wish her all the best at next week’s awards”.
