Criminology and Law
Studying criminology can lead to a wide range of careers across the criminal justice system and beyond, including policing, probation, prisons, youth justice, intelligence analysis, and victim support. It also opens pathways into roles like border force, court administration, community safety, research, and policy development. With additional training, you can move into specialist areas such as crime scene investigation, forensics, digital investigation, or fraud work.
Criminology also supports careers in the private sector - like security management or insurance investigation - because it develops strong analytical, behavioural, and problem‑solving skills. As part of your studies you will learn about the distinction between criminal and civil law, and the way in which both civil and criminal justice operates in England and Wales. This will involve following the processes in both a criminal and a civil case, which will highlight areas of importance, such as bail, and the necessity to make a case.
