Apprenticeship Description
DA Harrison is very much a family run business, established in 1958 it is now one of the leading haulage firms based in Cumbria.
As well as a dedicated haulage division we offer a diverse range of services which includes, pallet manufacturing, numerous storage options, fuel station with on-site shop, skip hire, waste recovery and recycling, ready mix concrete, pre-stressed concrete panels and aggregate supplier to name but a few. As a HGV Technician Apprentice, you will be trained to inspect, maintain, and repair heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to the highest standard. This is a hands-on role, where you’ll work alongside skilled technicians and fitters and gain practical experience in a fast-paced, supportive workshop environment of our growing fleet of vehicles. Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will develop the technical knowledge and skills needed to become a fully qualified HGV technician. We can offer full support and mentoring throughout, practical, hands-on experience in a busy commercial workshop, opportunity to earn while you learn and gain a nationally recognised qualification and a long-term career pathway within a growing and supportive company.
Key Responsibilities:
• Learn to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using diagnostic equipment
• Support in performing repairs and replacing faulty parts
• Keep accurate records of work completed and parts used
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment
• Follow health and safety procedures at all times
• General housekeeping
Working Week
7am to 5pm Mon-Fri: Dependent on age 40 hours per week including college days if under 18
Skills required:
Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify issues, think critically, and assist in resolving faults in a practical, logical manner.
Willingness to learn the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicles systems whilst attending Carlisle College on day release for 3 years.
Communication Skills: Able to listen carefully, follow directions, and clearly report progress or problems to supervisors and colleagues.
Time Management: Capable of managing time effectively, meeting deadlines, and working efficiently without compromising quality.
Attention to Safety: Understands and applies health and safety regulations in a busy workshop environment.
Personal Qualities:
Enthusiasm and interest in HGV mechanics.
Strong Work Ethic: Reliable, punctual, and committed to completing tasks to a high standard, even when working under pressure.
Attention to detail: Careful and thorough in all aspects of mechanical work, helping to ensure vehicle safety and performance.
Adaptability: Willing to work on a variety of vehicle types and adapt to new technologies and procedures as the industry evolves.
Professionalism: Maintains a positive attitude, takes pride in their work, and represents the company with integrity.

Entry Requirements:
Maths & English GCSE grade 4 / C or equivalent qualification
