This highly practical one year programme is a top-up course for those who have completed the L3 Diploma in Music Performance.
It is delivered across three days with a combination of practical workshops and contextual studies and carries a maximum of 168 UCAS points.
Real life’ projects enable students to be assessed through industry related tasks which develop:
1 - Music skills; playing / singing techniques of a variety of musical genres including pop / rock / jazz / blues / funk / soul, playing in a band / as a soloist, home studio recording skills, music history, music licensing, music business, music theory, live events, musical vocabulary.
2 - Transferrable Skills; website design, video editing, finances, digital design (Photoshop), marketing and promotion, journalism, event planning, Microsoft Excel / Teams / PowerPoint, podcasts, presenting skills, primary and secondary research with Harvard referencing, teamwork, and independence.
The music industry is changing all the time; therefore, it is important that students are kept up to date with current trends and have access to professionals working in the industry today.
Our lecturers are practitioners and understand the demands on today’s working musicians and ensure, on completion of the course, that students are equipped with the knowledge to progress.
Taking inspiration from a music TV show you will learn about all the roles required to create a live performance, which will be streamed on the internet. You will study jazz and blues techniques and perform in the show as well as carry out a job role to stage the event these can include marketing and promotion, stage manager, production manager, health and safety, finances and front of house. You will participate in song writing and composition workshops then choose which area to focus on. Research on royalties and music licensing will run alongside to guide you in protecting your own music, as well as potentially earning royalties. Either working independently or as a group, you can select a chosen area of study to focus on. You will be guided by your tutor, who will help you create a project which showcases your strengths. Previously students have written and produced their own EP with a launch night, created a research article on women in the music industry, organised their own event, composed music for therapy sessions and researched how music is used in therapy, performed songs focusing on particular artists / songwriters / musical genres.
