This Level 3 one-year entry course is designed for students who wish to broaden their skills and knowledge in music recording, sound production and technical events areas of lighting, visuals and sound.
This course will prepare students for employment and progression to higher education and is equivalent to 3 AS Levels. It is also a requirement for entry onto the Extended Diploma in Music Production.
The course is predominately project led and has collaborative projects with Music, Media and Performing Arts courses providing students with exciting hands-on vocational learning experiences.
You will take part in both academic and practical studies alongside other like-minded and creative students who all share a keen interest in the music and sound industries.
On this course you will be working with other students in a supervised, structured and well-resourced environment. These resources include a professional recording studio, post-production suite, music lab and music practice rooms, all equipped with industry standard hardware and software.
Within year 1, units 1-4 are introduction units within the UAL program and are taught first in term 1. These introduce basic skills to the students with a lower bar than the other units on the course. In term 2 students progress onto Units 5, 6 and 7 that enhance and build upon skills introduced in units 1-4 with a higher bar and difficulty level introduced by the tasks on the assignment briefs. In term 3, unit 8 is the sole unit that takes skills from all units of 1-7 throughout the rest of the year with an even greater bar and difficulty level to strive for.

An Extended Diploma in Music Production, developing key skills and knowledge through practical learning across all aspects of Music Production offering a wide range of possible destinations.
Extra Studies:Functional Skills, GCSE in Maths and English.
Units are delivered and assessed through industry related projects that put students into real industry situations including: 1-Live sound, 2-Music record production, 3-Music technology performance. Students on this course are involved in running the sound for most of the year’s gigs for Music and Music Production and have opportunities to be involved in technical aspects of Performing Arts shows and productions, which further enhances the skill sets that support other units on the programme.
You will be assessed in a mixture of different ways such as: 1-Technical live shows, 2-Digital productions and portfolios, 3-Demonstrations, 4-Presentations, 5-Reports, 6-Essays, 7-Formal tests, 8-Observed workshops
- 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) and above, including maths and English,
- or
- Level 2 Vocational qualification at Merit or Distinction and GCSEs at grade 4 (C) and above in maths and English,
- or
- Scottish Equivalent,
- GCSE Music desirable but not essential,
- Applicants should have good instrumental skills, vocal skills or demonstrable production skills; however, we do not require you to have an official music qualification,
- A basic understanding of music theory and or composition is also beneficial.

The Extended Diploma in Music Production or if you have enough UCAS points from the first year added onto a previous AS, A2 levels, Highers or Advanced Highers University is an option.
Other Details:
Audition and Interview Required consisting of: 1-Perform two pieces of music on your specialist instrument or 2-Present a portfolio of work and a piece of music programming/sequencing production work.
