This programme provides you with many of the skills required by the motor vehicle industry and provides you with an introduction into motor vehicle (car) systems.
With a keen interest in motor vehicles and a desire to learn how they work as well as how to maintain and repair them, you will be supported to gain the required study skills, as well as practical and theoretical knowledge within our motor vehicle workshops.
This course focuses on the core automotive and technical skills values by employers in the workplace. You will develop your knowledge and skills of light goods vehicles / cars.You will get used to using industry-standard equipment and prepare for life in a busy working motor vehicle garage. You will learn the ins and outs of job roles and responsibilities in the motor industry, and be supported to work out what it is you’d like to do
Students will learn;
- Motor vehicle servicing and inspection
- Basic engineering skills
- Health and Safety
- Motor vehicle systems (engines, suspension, steering, transmission and electrical)
Level 1 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies
Extra Studies:The course is split between formal classroom-based study, practical workshop training and directed self-study including computer-based learning packages.
Assessment will be by the completion of written knowledge assessments and assignments, alongside a portfolio of practical assessment evidence which will be assessed formally in the motor vehicle workshops.
- 4 GCSEs at Grades 2/1 (E/F),
- or
- Entry level qualification,
- or
- Scottish equivalent.

Completion of this Level 1 programme will enable you to continue your studies and progress onto a Level 2 Motor Vehicle Qualification, subject to successfully completing a progression assessment exam.
This could also help you to seek employment with a local garage or progress on to a motor vehicle mechanics or technician course.
Other Details:
All students will be required to complete a minimum of 20 hours work placement.
