Carlisle College alumna, Ava Dickinson, has achieved outstanding success at this year’s Steel to Reel Awards in Bolton, Manchester - taking home two major titles: Best Editing and Best Overall Film.
Hosted by the University of Greater Manchester, the Steel to Reel Awards celebrate emerging talent in film and media production. Ava’s film impressed judges with its creativity, technical skill, and powerful storytelling, earning her recognition among some of the region’s most promising young filmmakers.
Reflecting on her win, Ava said:
“It was such an honour to even be nominated. When I first entered my film into the festival, I expected nothing of it, but when I found out I was nominated, I was thrilled. Then to win two awards was phenomenal - it really boosted my confidence and reminded me of the hard work I and everyone else put into it!”
Ava attended the event with one of her actors, Derrie Hall, describing the evening as “a reunion and a celebration.”
“The festival was such an amazing experience,” Ava shared. “We got to watch the other nominees’ films and see everyone recognised for their work, which was really inspiring. One of the most surreal moments was being presented the Best Overall Film award by Nick Dudman, who worked on Harry Potter and Star Wars. It was such a full-circle moment for me as a creative.”
A Creative Journey Shaped at Carlisle College
Ava’s passion for film and media began right here at Carlisle College, where she studied Creative Media Production and Technology (Film Production). She credits the course - and her tutors - for giving her the skills, confidence, and inspiration to succeed.
“I’ve always felt drawn to something digitally creative, so choosing Carlisle College just made sense,” she said. “The two years I spent there were the highlight of my life. I learned so much about the media industry and discovered a lot about myself too.”
Ava highlighted the course’s hands-on and flexible approach as one of its biggest strengths.
“The freedom we had on the course was amazing. We were encouraged to explore our own ideas while gaining real, practical skills. The tutors made even the theory lessons engaging and fun, and they really pushed me to step out of my comfort zone - something I’ll always be grateful for.”
Looking to the Future
After graduating from Carlisle College, Ava has continued to pursue her creative ambitions and is now studying Digital Television Production at Ravensbourne University in London.
“It’s been such a rewarding journey,” she said. “Even though I focused on film at college, it’s opened up so many different paths for me. I’m really enjoying what I’m doing now, and I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes me.”
When asked what advice she’d give to future Carlisle College students considering a filmmaking course, Ava had simple but powerful words:
“Go for it! Even if you’re not completely sure where it’ll lead, the experience itself is amazing. You’ll gain valuable life skills, make incredible friends, and learn so much about yourself. I wouldn’t be where I am now without Carlisle College.”
Celebrating Student Success
Darren Horne, one of Ava’s former tutors at Carlisle College, said:
“We’re incredibly proud of Ava and everything she’s achieved. Her passion, creativity, and dedication were evident from day one, and it’s fantastic to see her hard work recognised at such a respected event. She’s a true example of what can be accomplished with drive and determination.”
Congratulations, Ava, on your incredible achievements - we can’t wait to see what you create next!
