Carlisle College welcomed new and returning students with a dynamic and inclusive Freshers Week packed with fun, education, and community spirit. Held during the first full week of the academic year, the event showcased the very best of what the college and wider Carlisle community have to offer.
The week began with College Day, where students explored everything the college provides, from academic departments and student support services, to enrichment opportunities, and extracurricular activities.
Midweek brought an adrenaline rush with an action-packed morning of events including a Rodeo Bull and Last Man Standing competition, courtesy of Air Bounce Cumbria. This was followed by a very vibrant and fun Colour Run. These activities brought laughter, friendly competition, and a strong sense of camaraderie among the staff and students.
On Health Day, students were encouraged to focus on physical and mental wellbeing. Activities promoted healthy habits, wellness resources, and support services available on campus. Workshops and stalls covered topics ranging from fitness and nutrition to stress management and sexual health.
The penultimate day was End Hate Day, dedicated to embracing diversity and celebrating each other's differences. Students came together to learn about each other's cultures, celebrate differences, and commit to building a more inclusive community. We were joined by Julie Minns MP who delivered a powerful welcome speech to our students, before they ventured to speak with a range of amazing organisations who brought the energy with interactive and thought-provoking stalls.
Organisations included:
- Anti-Racist Cumbria,
- Carlisle United Football Club,
- Cumbria Police,
- Carlisle Eden Mind,
- Healthwatch Cumberland,
- Civil Nuclear Constabulary,
- City of Sanctuary,
- Carlisle Refugee Action Group,
- Spiral,
- PINC,
- Every Life Matters
The festivities concluded with Student Day, a celebration of local culture and commerce. Pop-up stalls featured small local businesses, offering everything from handmade goods to sweet treats. Students enjoyed exclusive discounts, games, and stickers creating a fun and supportive atmosphere that encouraged everyone to shop local and get involved in the community.
Student Experience Manager Ellie Johnstone said, “This year we levelled up our Freshers Fair by taking over the whole week. It was a great way to kick off the new academic year and celebrate the NCG Guarantee Community Induction with a vibrant week of energy, connection, and support. Freshers Week was about more than just having fun - it was about creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels seen, supported, and excited to be part of Carlisle College. The feedback from students has been amazing.”
Carlisle College continues to position itself as not only a place of academic growth but also a hub of community engagement and cultural awareness. With such a successful start to the year, students are looking forward to what lies ahead.
