This course provides the technical skills and knowledge you need to start your career in painting and decorating. Learn from time-served industry tutors who can teach you all you need to know about this in-demand industry. If you are practical, have attention to detail and take pride in your work, then a career as a successful painter and decorator could be the path for you.

The structure of the course provides you with a range of experiences relating to work settings and the opportunity to work in the local community in developing skills and knowledge.

You will learn to develop technical skills around the use of access equipment, preparation and application of surfaces and producing decorative colour effects. These areas of study will develop industry standard understanding and expectations of the skill set required to work consistently in the industry.

Entry requirements

GCSEs at grade 3 (D) and above in English and maths

Scottish equivalent

National 4 passes in English and Maths

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Painting and Decorating.

What will I learn?

Preparation of surfaces for decoration
Principles of construction
Application of surface coatings
Application of papers to walls and ceilings
Producing decorative colour effects

Work experience opportunities

Students studying level 1 painting and decorating at Carlisle College will have the opportunities to benefit from employer set projects. We work with employers to develop industry standard projects and provide students with a platform to showcase their skills to local employers.

English and Maths

We make sure all students have the opportunity to enhance their skills and embed maths and English throughout the course. For example, mixing ratios of materials and measuring rooms.

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this course you can progress onto the Level 2 Painting and Decorating course, another construction course at Level 1, or an apprenticeship.

Course costs

If you are aged 16-18 when you begin your course you are likely to be eligible for free tuition. Detailed information can be found within the financial support section.

What advice would you give to future students? Enjoy it – pick what you want to focus on and go for it. Where would you like to see yourself in the future? Running my own business. What would you like to do next year? Level 2 then progress to an apprenticeship What do you enjoy most about studying Painting and Decorating? Seeing the work you put in turn into the final product

What advice would you give to future students? Don’t be afraid of you think might be there – I was worried that there wouldn’t be many girls on the course and there are quite a lot in the trade. Where would you like to see yourself in the future? Hopefully managing my own business, or working with Brooklyn and Pheobe. What would you like to do next year? Either move on to Level 2 or apply for an apprenticeship. What do you enjoy most about studying Painting and Decorating? Experimenting with colours, putting them together to see what looks best.

What advice would you give to future students? Don’t worry about experience or if you think you are good at it or not. Everyone is there to learn from the basics. Where would you like to see yourself in the future? Hopefully managing my own business. What would you like to do next year? Progress to Level 2 then when more confident apply for an apprenticeship What do you enjoy most about studying Painting and Decorating? Learning a new trade and where I can hopefully make a good career from.
