This course will support you in your entry to a career in the Motor Vehicle Industry and will give you a very good insight into the nature of the Motor Industry as well as the standards and levels of professionalism expected.

This course focuses on the core automotive and technical skills values by employers in the workplace.

You will develop your knowledge and skills of light goods vehicles / cars. You will become proficient in the use of industry-standard equipment and prepare for life in a busy working motor vehicle garage.

You will learn the ins and outs of job roles and responsibilities in the motor industry, and be supported to work out what it is you’d like to do.

Entry requirements

Level 1 qualification in Motor Vehicle, or industry experience.
4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) and above, including English and maths

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will achieve a Level 2 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Studies.

Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive industry
Support for job roles in the automotive environment
Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment routine vehicle maintenance
Vehicle engine mechanical, lubrication and cooling system units and components
Light vehicle electrical units and components
Vehicle chassis units and components
Transmission and driveline units and components

Work experience opportunities

You will have an opportunity to spend some time with local employers to develop your practical skills and professional, industry behaviours with employers such as Mercedes-Benz Carlisle.

You may also be able to get involved with employer projects. This year, students have worked with Mercedes-Benz to develop their industry skills through project work around design and implementation of vehicles and racetracks.

English and Maths

English and Maths skills are both essential and required within the Automotive sector. Your sessions will help with developing these skills further by embedding key skills with all delivered lessons.

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to apply for an Apprenticeship, look for a position as a Motor Vehicle Technician or progress to the Level 3 in Motor Vehicle Studies.

Working at Cecil Street Motors alongside my Motor Vehicle Level 2 Maintenance and Repair course benefited me by allowing me to apply theory directly to real-world situations. It helped me develop practical skills such as using tools correctly, following safety procedures, and diagnosing common faults with greater confidence. Being in a working environment also improved my understanding of workshop routines, teamwork, and time management, which supported my studies and made the course content easier to understand and remember.
