Level 1 Hair and Beauty Student
Since starting college in September 2025, my life has changed in many positive ways. College has been a major step forward for me, both academically and personally. Over this time, I have grown in confidence, developed stronger social skills, and gained valuable knowledge and experience that will help me in my future career. Attending college has pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to believe more in myself and my abilities.
One of the biggest changes I have noticed since starting college is the improvement in my social skills. Before college, I often found it difficult to speak to new people or feel confident in group situations. However, being in a college environment has helped me overcome many of these challenges. I am now more comfortable communicating with others, working as part of a team, and expressing my ideas. Meeting new people and interacting with classmates on a daily basis has helped me become more confident and open, which is something I am very proud of.
The course I am studying, Level 1 Hair and Beauty, has played a huge role in my personal development. Throughout the course, I have learned many new techniques and skills related to hair and beauty. These include basic hair styling, hair washing, blow-drying, client care, and maintaining a professional appearance. Learning these skills has given me a better understanding of the industry and what is expected when working in a professional salon environment. I have enjoyed gaining hands-on experience, as it has allowed me to put my learning into practice and build my confidence in my abilities.
As well as developing practical skills, the course has helped me improve my time management and responsibility. I have learned the importance of being punctual, organised, and prepared for lessons. Completing assignments and practical work has taught me how to manage my workload more effectively. These skills are important not only for college but also for future employment and everyday life. A key part of my course has been my work placement, which has had a very positive impact on me. Through my placement, I have been able to experience what it is like to work in a real salon environment. This has helped me strengthen my social skills even further, as I have had to communicate with co-workers and clients in a professional manner. Being in a working environment has helped me understand the importance of teamwork, good communication, and a positive attitude. While being at my placement, I have built strong relationships with my co-workers, especially Becky and Jo. They have both been very supportive and welcoming, which helped me feel comfortable and confident in the workplace. Becky and Jo have taught me many things related to hair and salon work, including professional techniques, customer service skills, and how to behave confidently in a salon setting. Their guidance and encouragement have helped bring me out of my shell and significantly raised my confidence.
Having supportive co-workers has made a big difference to my placement experience. Becky and Jo have always been willing to help me learn, answer questions, and give me advice. Because of them, I feel more confident when speaking to others and taking on new tasks. They have helped me believe in myself and shown me that it is okay to make mistakes as long as I learn from them. This has helped me develop a more positive attitude towards learning and trying new things.
Overall, my experience at college so far has been extremely positive. I have grown as a person, developed important life skills, and gained valuable knowledge in hair and beauty. College has helped me become more confident, independent, and motivated about my future. I feel proud of how far I have come since September 2025 and excited about continuing my journey in the hair and beauty industry. I am looking forward to building on the skills I have already learned and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
In WEX I have learnt about business and how to start one, I have learned how important it is to have a financial basis to start up a company. I know it is not just a case of open a shop, get the equipment I need and that is then it, I have to work at it, build up a customer portfolio, give the best experience and customer service I can, because the best type of advertising is word by mouth and peoples recommendations.
