Tim Whitmarsh

Uniformed Protective Services Tutor

Tim joined us as a lecturer in 2022. Prior to joining Carlisle College, Tim was a PE teacher for over 20 years in secondary schools in Suffolk, Derbyshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Isle of Wight. He has an extensive background in sport and outdoor pursuits, having studied both for his teaching degree in Plymouth. Alongside his studies, Tim has served on two mountain rescue teams in Northern England and Mid Wales. He has trained and attended 999 emergency call-outs in most of England and Wales’s most mountainous regions. He has been a keen climber, kayaker, and sailor throughout his life and is a qualified instructor in many outdoor pursuits. He has explored the mountains, rivers and seas of the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Tim has competed in many sports. Triathlon has played a significant part in his life, competing, coaching, and volunteering. He has worked at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. His greatest achievement was being appointed as GB Team manager for British Triathlons Long Distance World Championship team. He managed the team at multiple World Championships including Australia and the USA.

"During our time at college, we have spent our two years studying on the Uniformed Protective Service course where we have covered a range of topics such as Criminal Investigations, Teamwork & Leadership and Behaviour and Discipline. Throughout the course, we have always been supported by our tutors through exams and assignments. Across the two years we have had opportunities to visit the Fire Station, Cumbria Police Headquarters, Patterdale Mountain Rescue and many University Trips. The wide range of opportunities allowed us to develop skills needed for a job within the Uniformed Protective Services.

In year two, as students, we introduced our own college podcast where we chatted to staff and tutors. It developed our confidence and social skills where we planned and organised each podcast and we hope this can be passed down to the next UPS students."

Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services

During my last year of school, my attendance was low due to a lack of motivation and support, which affected me academically and personally. However, since enrolling at college in Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services, the support from my tutors and structure of the course has given me a new perspective on my engagement with learning and helped me stay focused and committed. As a result of this, my attendance has improved significantly and my dedication to the course has been reflected in my academic performance as I recently achieved a distinction in my exam. This has encouraged me to stay determined to succeed and pursue a career in protective services.
