This specification is designed to inspire and motivate students, providing appropriate stretch and challenge whilst ensuring that the assessment and texts are, as far as possible, accessible to all.
It enables students to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts and write clearly.
The final exams consist of two equally balanced papers, each assessing reading and writing in an integrated way.
The GCSE 9 - 1 specification consists of three parts and has two exams. Paper one covers reading and writing of fiction texts. Paper two covers reading and writing of non-fiction texts. You will also be assessed on your English-speaking skills. There is a strong focus on English Language throughout this course.

Extra Studies:One 2-hour 45-minute taught session with a 15-minute break. You will also be required to complete work at home independently, and online using the college virtual learning platform. This additional work will be as a guide an additional 3 hours per week.
You will complete a variety of pieces of homework that will support you in your development and progression towards achieving a good grade. You will complete 2 exams at the end of the academic year.

- Places are offered on an individual basis, but we generally require you to gain a Level 1 in the initial assessment. It this isn’t achieved; we may offer you an alternative course such as functional Skills.

Gaining GCSEs will open most doors to future Level 3 courses that you may be interested in.
