More about the course

Care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, commitment. Focus on the core principles of health and social care and early years. This course is ideal if you like working with others and want to make a difference in society.

This study programme provides an opportunity to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills for success in employment in the caring field. It is designed for those who wish to work in a care setting e.g., a residential or care home, or a nursery or childcare setting.

You will explore career opportunities and next steps relating to the Healthcare or Early Years sector. You will be able to identify and develop key work skills which will support you within the sector.

Learners will develop a greater understanding of the Healthcare and Early Years sector – how they operate, roles within the sector, mental health illnesses, etc.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) and above, including English and maths

Level 1 vocational qualification at Merit

Distinction and Level 1 qualifications in English and maths

Scottish equivalent
The course requires students to undertake a work placement, which may involve work with children or vulnerable adults
Applicants who do not have a current DBS criminal check will be required to obtain one through the college
In addition, you must also have two references and pass a vocational related assessment

Work experience opportunities

You will take part in a mandatory work placement of 52.5 hours and be supported to find a suitable placement provider.

English and Maths

If you do not hold English and/or maths and GCSEs grade 4 or above, you will be supported with dedicated lessons to help you achieve English and maths qualifications.

Where can I progress?

On successful completion of this course, you can choose to stay on and complete the extended diploma or go straight into employment.
