Construction students at Carlisle College have achieved strong results at this year’s SkillBuild Regional Qualifier, with multiple top-three finishes across a range of trades.
The competition brought together learners and apprentices from across the North West to test their skills in live, industry-standard challenges.
Carlisle College students performed well across several categories, securing a number of podium places, including a first-place finish from Plastering apprentice Jake Waite:
· Bricklaying 2nd – Charlie Bell 3rd – Harvey Moss
· Carpentry 2nd – TY McLaughlin 3rd – Adam Prentice
· Joinery 3rd – Shaun Gray
· Plastering 1st – Jake Waite 2nd – Brandon Porthouse 3rd – Ashton Briscoe
"Carlisle college plastering department are proud to put our students through the annual Skill build competitions as it is a great chance for our students to showcase their specialist skill sets. Jake has competed in 3 skillbuild competitions whilst representing Carlisle College and has always impressed with his dedication and hard working ethic. The skillbuild competition is a great opportunity to visit areas of plastering that are now deemed heritage. An example of this is Jakes ability to work with fibrous plaster, which is no longer included in the plastering apprenticeship. Jake’s achievement at the college is a statement to his hard work and great attitude."

SkillBuild, delivered by Go Construct, is the UK’s largest construction skills competition. It gives students the chance to test their abilities against industry standards and gain experience in a competitive environment.
The winning students will find out in July if they qualify for a spot for a spot at the national SkillBuild final, part of WorldSkills.
Taking part in events like this helps students build confidence, develop practical skills and prepare for careers in the construction industry.
“We are proud of our students and their achievements at this year’s SkillBuild competition.
