The health and fitness industry continues to grow, with over 7000 gyms in the UK and more than 10 million members, which means almost one in seven people in the UK is a member of a gym (State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, The Leisure Database, May 2019). This gives the industry a market value of more than £5 billion, meaning that there are many employment opportunities for people with industry-recognised health and fitness related qualifications.
The BTEC Level 3 in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training has been developed in collaboration with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and the Chartered Institute of Management for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), meaning that learners who complete the qualification can successfully qualify as a Level 2 Gym Instructor and are able to work in industry straight away.
The course is equivalent to 3 A-levels which means learners can progress onto Higher Education/University, this course would suit those looking to progress onto Sports Rehabilitation, Strength and Conditioning or Fitness Instructing.
Year 1 of the course gives learners a broad introduction to working in the sport and fitness industry including preparing them for working in a self-employed capacity and for working with clients in a gym environment (gym inductions, small-group-based exercise). All of these skills are required to work as a gym instructor. Year 2 provides the knowledge and skills for professional accreditation with REPs and CIMSPA and is therefore recognised by employers. It extends learners’ knowledge and skills to working with individuals and developing training programmes to meet their individual needs. All of this is required to work as a personal trainer. As well as studying units in areas such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, self-employment in sport, careers in sport and ethical and current issues, there is also a large practical element with learners working within a gym environment to instruct clients and develop personalised training programmes.
