Maintenance Engineers maintain the safety, integrity and effective operation of plant and equipment in one or more of the following Industries that are part of or have activities that are part of the broader national infrastructure Engineering Sector: the electricity generating environment, which may use a range of different fuels including coal, gas, nuclear, wind and other renewable sources; telecommunications power plants; oil and gas refining; nuclear waste reprocessing; processing and production of chemicals; pharmaceuticals; human and animal food; cosmetics; petrochemicals; sewerage and the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will work on various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the Engineering Industry sectors and the Technicians can be expected to migrate through these sectors during the course of their careers. Dependent upon the sector that they are employed in there may be subtle differences in terms of the composition and application of the plant and equipment. However, the fundamental principles of operation will be the same regardless of the engineering sector.

These Technicians will undertake installation, testing, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance and repair of a range of equipment, sometimes complex, as part of planned preventative and reactive maintenance programmes.

They will be responsible for the quality of their own work, possibly others’ and ensuring the work is completed safely, meets stakeholder quality, time and budget requirements, whilst maintaining the efficient running of plant and equipment.

Entry requirements

Candidates require Level 2 Maths and English (equivalent to GCSE grade 4 (C) or above).

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course you will achieve a Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Apprenticeship Standard and BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering. Some employers may choose to include a Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Maintenance.

BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering:

Engineering principles
Calculus to solve engineering problems
Static mechanical principles in practice
Delivery of engineering processes safely as a team
Applied commercial and quality principles in engineering
Computer aided design in engineering
Engineering product design and manufacture

Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical):

Complying with statutory regulations and organisational requirements.
Using and interpreting engineering data and documentation.
Working efficiently and effectively in engineering.
Handing over and confirming completion of maintenance activities.
Carrying out fault diagnosis on mechanical equipment.
Maintaining mechanical equipment.
Restoring mechanical components to usable condition by repair.
Carrying out preventative planned maintenance on mechanical equipment.
Producing components using hand fitting techniques.
Preparing and using lathes for turning operations.
Producing sheet metal components and assemblies.
Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits.
Forming and assembling electrical cable enclosure and support systems.

Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance (Electrical):

Complying with statutory regulations and organisational requirements.
Using and interpreting engineering data and documentation.
Working efficiently and effectively in engineering.
Handing over and confirming completion of maintenance activities.
Carrying out fault diagnosis on electrical equipment and circuits.
Maintaining electrical equipment.
Modifying or rewiring electrical circuits.
Testing electrical equipment and circuits.
Carrying out preventative planned maintenance on electrical equipment.
Producing components using hand fitting techniques.
Producing sheet metal components and assemblies.
Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits.
Forming and assembling electrical cable enclosure and support systems.
Maintaining electrical equipment/systems.

You will learn how to complete basic engineering operations such as electrical wiring and testing, electrical enclosure formation, and electrical maintenance.

You will learn how to comply with health and safety requirements and regulations in an engineering environment.

You will learn how to maintain a range of industrial plant and machinery using the latest engineering practices.

You will learn the relevant engineering theories, principles, mathematics and behaviours required for the work to be carried out within the work environment.

Where can I progress?

After you have successfully completed this apprenticeship, you will be able to progress onto higher education (HNC/HND) and/or higher apprenticeships in Mechanical, Electrical, Multi-skilled, or Engineering Management.

You can continue your studies with HNC and HND in Engineering at Carlisle College.

English and maths

No formal Maths & English study is required for apprentices who have met the entry requirements for this apprenticeship, although Maths & English skills are embedded within course content.

Apprenticeship pay

Your employer will pay you Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage as a minimum, in line with national minimum wage regulations. Your rate of pay will be agreed with your employer.
