Level 1 Art and Design is the perfect course if you are interested in studying art and progressing into the creative industries. Whether you weren’t able to study or gain Art and Design GCSE at school or if you weren’t able to achieve your English and maths, this is the course for you.

At Carlisle College you’ll have a hands-on experience as you learn and develop transferrable and creative skills such as working independently, being proactive, being organised and developing subject specific skills including developing an understanding of different drawing techniques, working with clay, building 3D models with paper and card, using printmaking techniques such as monoprint, collagraph and relief printmaking.

You will develop digital skills on our in-house Mac labs and engage in an exciting art-based practise in creative studios inspired through regular trips to museums and galleries across the country.

Entry requirements

GCSEs at grade 2/1 (E/F) in English and maths
GCSE Art is desirable but not essential

Work experience opportunities

Our students engage with creative industries throughout the year. You will be asked to work on projects outside of Carlisle College to provide you with real world experience of what it means to be a creative.

We will also help you to develop your interview and CV writing skills. We have a dedicated work experience team who can help you find and organise work placement opportunities.

English and Maths

If you do not hold English and/or maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above you will be supported with dedicated lessons to help you achieve English and maths qualifications.

In Art and Design you will learn how to use ratios in painting and also scale, shape and space in design. You will also build on your English skills by developing an annotated creative portfolio and communicating with your team in group work.

Where can I progress?

Upon successful completion of this course you can progress onto a Level 2 BTEC Extended Certificate in Art and Design Skills or UAL Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology.
