More about the course

The Level 2 Diploma in Hair & Media Make-up is designed to help you take your first steps towards a career as a make-up artist or hair stylist. You’ll learn the basic techniques to create a variety of make-up and hair looks. We’ll teach you how to create an image for your client based on a variety of themes, alongside a range of hair styling techniques including, plaiting, twisting, vertical rolling and blow drying. You will also learn appropriate health and safety and client consultation for the salon environment.

During the academic year there will be opportunities to enrich your learning. You will have the opportunity to go to beauty shows and industry trips.

You will take part in competitions in house, across our colleges and have the opportunity to enter the world skills competitions. This will prepare you to work in a competitive environment whilst enhancing your professionalism, communication and working as part of a team.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D), including English and maths
Level 1 qualification vocational qualification
Level 1 functional skills qualification in English and maths / equivalent is desirable

Scottish equivalent

A friendly, mature approach and the ability to communicate effectively are essential. Along with a high level of personal hygiene, personal presentation, and awareness of health and safety.

English and Maths

When in industry you will rely on maths and English to take measurements, calculate product ratios, payments, costings and timings. We embed maths and English into your programme over the duration of your course.

If you have not yet achieved GCSE grade 4 in maths and English, you will be supported to achieve these.

Where can I progress?

Upon successful completion of this course you can go into employment in the industry or progress onto a Level 2 course in Beauty Treatments.
